At the end of my junior year of high school I participated
in a local hack-a-thon for middle and high-schoolers. It was a 3-day event
where we had to come up with and prototype an application and create a business
model to solve a problem in the community. Our team wanted to make the underutilized
Polk County public transit system easier to use by creating an app to track the
position of the busses. So, we designed an app that has a similar layout to the Uber app but builds on top of their pre-existing desktop bus map. We then had
to present a slideshow about the idea and showing the prototype to the
audience. Our team ended up winning the event but unfortunately did not
continue to work on the application after the event.
I am taking the class to learning more about
entrepreneurship and how to solve problems that interest me, but also partially
because it is a one of the 2 options to meet a requirement for the Innovation
Academy minor. My main hope is that I end the semester seeing the class as
having been an opportunity to learn more about entrepreneurship and having
gained worthwhile skills, and not as just a minor requirement.
Hi Justin,
ReplyDeleteI found your entrepreneurship experience really interesting. I think an app like that would be really helpful, and I'm not at all surprised your group won! I am also taking this class to improve my problem-solving ability. Though I am not in the Innovation Academy, I think this class is really good because the skills we learn could be useful in any career path.
