Assignment 6 - Identifying Opportunities In Economic & Regulatory Trends

Economic:
Opportunity 1: Optimizing online grocery shopping
b)      Ecommerce was growing before the pandemic and has gotten a boost from it. For one store, Sprout’s, their ecommerce sales have increased 950% from last year up to 13% of sales. There has been an increased demand for online grocery delivery services and for grocery pick up services.
c)       The typical customer would be the regular grocery shopper who is wary of public spaces due to the pandemic, or who wants to save time by shopping online
d)      I think there is a lot of room for development in this area and it would be relatively easy to exploit, there are existing services but with such a massive spike in demand, there is likely room for innovation.
-          Why did I see the opportunity?
o   The idea of using online grocery pickup/delivery services is something I have considered recently, though is something I would not be willing to pay money for. I do know that my mom has used service that Walmart offered, but I have not heard her opinions on it.
Opportunity 2: Local Agriculture
b)      The meat industry is struggling because of the closure of large meatpacking plants and issues with distribution. Many pig farmers are having to kill the pigs themselves rather than send them off to meatpacking plants, this is mostly being done by gassings or shooting them. This is not exclusive to pigs, poultry processor Allen Harim Foods killed nearly 2 million birds on farms in Delaware and Maryland last month, there is also dumping of milk and destruction of fresh vegetables. From this I think it might be valuable to support local agriculture to supply communities during crisis.
c)       The customer here is meat consuming Americans.
d)      This would probably fall under difficult to exploit, I do not know how real this opportunity really is. I would have to look further into it more to know if this is at all viable, or if it would even solve the problems that I believe it would.
-          Why did I see the opportunity?
o   It feels extremely contradictory to see this kind of waste when there is a demand for the thing that is being wasted. I think anything that can be done to reduce wasting the lives of animals would be beneficial, and whether or not encouraging and supporting local agriculture is the best way to go about it there must be a way of preventing similar outcomes during the next crisis.

Policy:
Opportunity 3: Decentralized Services
b)      It seems like there is not much regard for online privacy, when a bill to prevent warrantless surveillance is rejected by both parties. It seems beneficial to make services that are peer to peer or operate over a blockchain more common to prevent surveillance and censorship. Particularly, I think there is room for peer to peer chat applications to become more popular.
c)       US citizens interested in protecting their data.
d)      It would be relatively difficult to exploit. I do not think the average citizen is as worried about their privacy online as the maybe should be. I also think it might be difficult for people to switch to platforms that sacrifice ease of use and avoids identifying information for privacy.
-          Why did I see the opportunity?
o   I have an interest in and have taken an online certification course for cyber security, so I value internet privacy more than the average person.
Opportunity: Artificial Intelligence
b)      There will likely be an increasing amount of regulation surrounding artificial intelligence in the coming years. I think following the regulation for artificial Intelligence may lead to opportunities presenting themselves.
c)       Anyone concerned with AI in the US
d)      This might be difficult to exploit, depending on the goal it would be difficult to just create or use an AI opportunistically. Depending on the regulation passed and how it can be exploited, an AI system would have to be developed to cater to that interest, which is not a simple task.
-          Why did I see the opportunity?
o   I am interested in what legal regulations will be passed for Artificial Intelligence, I have done some work with machine learning but not AI systems so I’d like to learn more about them.

Assignment 5 - Identifying Local Opportunities

Investigation into Florida’s unemployment system underway
Source:
Description:
The Florida unemployment system has not worked properly since 2013. Over hundreds of thousands of people are waiting for either their claims to be approved or for their check to arrive. An investigation has begun into the system, but that does not mean the people waiting for unemployment will get it any faster.
Problem:
Many people are unemployed and have no ability to collect unemployment, and finding new employment is difficult. They are without income and without a means to pressure the state government on a problem that should have been addressed years ago.

Unemployed workers in Florida, many a large portion likely of the service industry.

Dissatisfied students and families in FL still want in-person graduation ceremonies when COVID-19 wanes
Source:
Description:
Students and families are dissatisfied with how graduation ceremonies are being handled during the pandemic. Petitions have formed to ask for normal graduation ceremonies for the class of 2020 to take place once the pandemic has died down. Hosting graduation ceremonies on Zoom is not a particularly well favored or satisfying method for them.

Students and families feel that not enough is being done to recognize the achievement of the students. Graduation ceremonies are not able to take place right now for safety reasons, but the alternatives are unappealing to most students.

Tampa-St. Pete is a top destination as passengers start to get back on airplanes

Tourists who would normally visit Florida around this time.

Woman who designed Florida's COVID-19 dashboard has been removed from her position

There is a lack of clarity when it comes to the data that is being put out by the state in some cases. This is one of many articles on the issue, but there are many concerns being risen about the integrity of Florida’s reporting on Covid-19.
Who:
Florida residents trying to assess the pandemic.

GRU shut-off moratorium extended
Source:
Description:
Gainesville Regional Utilities (GRU) provides water, gas, and electricity to many Gainesville residents. 7645 customers of GRU have gone at least 30 days without paying a bill. A moratorium was put in place and has been extended to waive late fees for payments.
Problem:
Many Gainesville residents are not in a good place financially because of the shutdowns and are unable to afford utilities payments. The residents who are taking advantage of this moratorium will be expected to pay back what they owe when the moratorium is lifted, likely in installments.
Who:
Gainesville residents who are getting utilities from GRU.

Assignment 4 - Forming An Opportunity Belief

I believe an opportunity exists that will allow people to get a better idea of the sizes of shoes they order online. It can be difficult to shop for any clothing item online because it is difficult to know if something will fit or not. This issue is something that I ran into recently when ordering shoes online and when looking at product reviews to determine how a shoe would fit, saw other people experiencing the same issue. As the market for online shopping has grown over the past decade, more and more people are ordering shoes online and experiencing this common issue. In stores, of course, it is easy to try them on before buying, and some solutions such as amazon’s order 3 return 2 policy, though a hassle, have been created to make the process easier. I am, say, 60% sure this is an opportunity that exists from what I have seen online in reviews and while going through the process.

My original opportunity mostly still stands as is and is a common enough problem that someone might face. I do think I may have overestimated how many people buy shoes online currently, I interviewed family who I know have bought clothes online before. One of them brought up that the market for online shoe shopping may not be as large as I expect. From what I have learned it might be a good idea to address the issue of finding shoes that fit well as a more general problem or at least present it that way, but I am still not sure if or how I would broaden the framing of the opportunity. Adapting to customer feedback is important, if potential customers are uninterested in the product or service then then that probably means the opportunity needs to be adjusted. I do think that a sample size of 3 customers is not necessarily large enough to get a solid response, I think the customer reviews I have seen may be a more telling sign that the opportunity exists for a solution.
